Nightmarket
A real life platform for local artists. An event to meet others, showcase creative pieces, and enjoy food, drinks, and music.
Beginning in 2018, Recess approached Lululemon Toronto with an opportunity to produce a night market event inside of their 318 Queen St. community space. We felt there was a need in our community to meet others in-person while having work seen beyond the feed. Each market has been a success with over 500+ attendees overall, 30 vendors, multiple sponsors, and positive feedback.

When choosing artists for the Nightmarket we wanted to ensure that we were selecting artists who would benefit from a real world platform. Once artist’s submitted applications, our intention was to get to know each artist personally through a series of photoshoots that served as a place to build a rapport while also create promotional material. We took time to learn about the artist, their goals, what their struggle might be by only being social media focused. We took those learnings into account and created an experience for them and our audience to connect in real life.
To do this we looked at local markets around the city and found that guests would usually make a quick loop browsing items and leave. We wanted more reason for guests to stay at the event and get to know the artists. We set up areas of interaction such as couch areas with collage stations to get conversation going, gaming areas, brought in food/drink sponsors, and took time to really talk to our guests about what Recess is and who the artists were.
